Calorie Deficit Calculator
A free online calorie deficit calculator that calculates the daily calorie deficit, target daily calories, and estimated time needed to reach a goal weight, based on your BMR, activity level, and a chosen weekly weight-loss rate.
How the required deficit is calculated
The calculator estimates your maintenance calories (TDEE) the same way the Calorie Calculator does, then works backward from your chosen weekly loss rate using the standard estimate that one pound of body weight is roughly 3,500 calories. A 1 lb/week goal requires a 500 kcal/day deficit; a 2 lb/week goal requires 1,000 kcal/day.
Why the estimated timeline is approximate
Weight loss isn't perfectly linear - water weight, hormonal shifts, and metabolic adaptation as you lose weight all affect the real-world timeline. The weeks-to-goal figure assumes a constant rate and constant deficit, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a fixed schedule.
Reading the safety warning
If your target calories fall below roughly 1,200 kcal/day (women) or 1,500 kcal/day (men), the calculator flags it. Very low-calorie diets can be hard to sustain, may not supply enough nutrients, and are generally not recommended without medical supervision.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Picking an unrealistically fast rate
Solution:
Ignoring the safety warning
Solution:
Not adjusting the goal weight target realistically
Solution:
Treating the weeks-to-goal number as a guarantee
Solution:
Forgetting to update inputs as weight changes
Solution:
Confusing this with a maintenance calculator

Free Online Calorie Deficit Calculator
Set a goal weight and a target weekly loss rate, and this calculator works out exactly how many calories to eat each day to get there - plus how long it should take.
What You Get
- Your target daily calorie intake for your chosen rate of weight loss
- The exact daily calorie deficit required
- An estimated number of weeks to reach your goal weight
- A safety check against calorie targets that fall too low
Who Uses This Calculator
Anyone planning a weight-loss diet who wants a concrete daily calorie target and a realistic timeline, rather than guessing at a deficit.
