Final Grade Calculator

A free final grade calculator with two modes: calculate your overall course grade from weighted categories like homework, quizzes, and exams, or work backward from your current grade and final exam weight to find the score you need on your final to reach a target grade.

How a weighted overall grade is calculated

Each category's score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added together, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. A 30%-weighted midterm at 80% contributes differently than a 10%-weighted quiz average at 80% — weight, not just score, determines how much a category actually moves your overall grade.

The algebra behind "what do I need on my final"

Target grade = (Current grade × weight of everything else) + (Final exam score × final exam weight). Rearranging for the final exam score gives: Needed score = (Target − Current grade × weight of everything else) ÷ final exam weight. The calculator solves this instantly for any combination of current grade, final weight, and target.

When a target grade becomes impossible or already secured

If the required final exam score comes out above 100%, no score on the final can reach that target — the highest possible overall grade comes from a perfect final. If the required score comes out at or below 0%, the target is already locked in regardless of the final exam result. Both are useful, realistic answers the calculator flags directly instead of showing a confusing number.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting that category weights, not just scores, determine the overall grade

Solution:

An 80% average on a 40%-weighted category affects your grade far more than an 80% average on a 5%-weighted one — always check your syllabus for the actual weight of each category.

Assuming weights must add up to exactly 100% before calculating

Solution:

This calculator normalizes automatically, but it's worth double-checking your entered weights against your syllabus if the total is noticeably off from 100%.

Using the final exam's weight as a percentage of remaining points instead of the whole course

Solution:

Final exam weight should reflect its share of the entire course grade (e.g., 30% of the whole class), not just a share of what's left ungraded.

Not accounting for extra credit or dropped lowest scores

Solution:

If your syllabus drops a lowest quiz score or offers extra credit, adjust your entered scores/weights to reflect that before calculating — the calculator uses exactly what you enter.

Panicking over an "impossible" target without checking the actual number needed

Solution:

Even when a specific target is unreachable, the calculator still shows what's needed for a perfect final — often the achievable grade is still a strong one, just not the original target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter each category's name, weight (%), and your score (%) in that category. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight, sums the results, and divides by the total weight.
Switch to "What do I need on my final?" mode and enter your current grade, your final exam's weight, and your target overall grade — the calculator solves for the exact score needed.
It means your target grade can't be reached even with a perfect final exam score — the highest possible overall grade in that case comes from scoring 100% on the final.
Your target grade is already secured based on your current grade alone, regardless of what you score on the final exam.
No — the calculator normalizes automatically, though it's worth checking your entered weights against your syllabus if the total is noticeably off.
Enter scores as percentages of each category's total possible points, and the result will be an overall percentage you can compare to your school's letter-grade scale.
No — every calculation runs locally in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server.
