GPA Calculator
A free GPA calculator that computes your semester GPA from a list of courses, grades, and credit hours. Switch on Cumulative GPA mode to combine this semester with your prior cumulative GPA and total credit hours completed, for an updated overall college GPA.
How GPA is actually calculated
GPA is a weighted average, not a simple average of grades. Each grade converts to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), is multiplied by that course's credit hours to get "quality points," and GPA is the total quality points divided by total credit hours — so a 4-credit A counts twice as much toward your GPA as a 2-credit A.
Why cumulative GPA needs your prior record
A new semester's GPA on its own doesn't tell you your overall GPA — it has to be blended with everything completed before it, weighted by credit hours. The calculator reconstructs your total prior quality points from your current cumulative GPA × prior credit hours, adds this semester's quality points, and divides by your new total credit hours.
Why one bad semester matters less as you go
Because cumulative GPA is weighted by total credits, the same rough semester pulls a freshman's GPA down much further than a graduating senior's — a struggling 15-credit term against 15 prior credits is half your total weight, but against 105 prior credits it's only about 12%. This is also why raising a low cumulative GPA gets harder to do quickly the more credits you've already completed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Averaging grade points instead of weighting by credit hours

Forgetting to switch on Cumulative mode
Solution:
Entering prior GPA without prior credit hours (or vice versa)
Solution:
Including a repeated or withdrawn course incorrectly
Solution:
Assuming a plus/minus grade always changes the grade point value
