Sleep Cycle Calculator
A free online sleep cycle calculator that works out the ideal bedtime or wake-up time based on 90-minute sleep cycles, so you wake up at the end of a cycle instead of in the middle of one. Also shows the recommended hours of sleep for your age group, from infants through adults.
What a sleep cycle actually is
A full sleep cycle moves through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, and lasts about 90 minutes on average. Most adults need 5 to 6 complete cycles a night, which works out to roughly 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep.
Why waking up mid-cycle feels worse
Being woken during deep sleep, rather than at the lighter end of a cycle, is the main reason a full night's sleep can still leave you feeling groggy. Timing sleep in full 90-minute blocks makes it more likely you wake up during a lighter sleep stage.
Why the calculator adds time to fall asleep
Sleep cycles start once you're actually asleep, not once you get into bed. This calculator adds an average of 15 minutes (adjustable) to account for the time it typically takes to fall asleep, so the suggested bedtime is more realistic.
Recommended sleep by age
Select your age group to see the recommended range of sleep per 24 hours, based on standard pediatric and adult sleep guidelines — from 8–18 hours for newborns down to 7–9 hours for adults, since sleep needs change significantly across a lifetime.
The stages of a sleep cycle
A full 90-minute sleep cycle moves through several stages: light non-REM sleep, deeper non-REM sleep where breathing and heart rate slow to their lowest levels, and REM sleep, where the brain becomes more active and most dreaming occurs. Waking up at the end of a full cycle — rather than in the middle of deep non-REM sleep — is why timing bedtime or wake-up time to complete cycles tends to feel less groggy than an arbitrary hour count.
Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setting an alarm for a random round number

Treating 90 minutes as an exact, fixed number
